Tamiya 1/24 Ferrari 360 Modena

I am building this model as "fill-in project" in time gaps in other major projects.  The model is fairly easy to build and allows me to practice various techniques with out the risk of ruining a more expensive model.

The model specifications are as follows:

  • 1/24 scale
  • Overall length: 7.4", overall width: 3.7"
  • Complete V8 engine bay visible through rear hatch and transparent undercover.
  • Realistic cockpit interior.
  • Metal transfer emblems, chrome plated wheels, and rubber tires.

I also have a Tamiya 1/24 scale Ferrari Enzo waiting in the wings which I intend to super detail using the "Transkit" from Model Motorsports.

The build log

Before painting the main body, I glued in the brake ducts and headlight assemblies.  Even thought the body is red plastic, it goes without saying that to achieve a realistic finish it must be painted.

After two coats of white primer, a light sanding and two more coats of primer I started to apply a top coat.  I then applied two coats of color, let that dry for a few days, lightly sanded and then added a few light coats followed by a "wet" coat.  Once those coats had hardened (a few days later) I used progressively finer grades of Tamiya rubbing compound followed by a final coat of polish.   The picture below shows the final finish.

I have also been working on the engine, which compared to engines I usually work on is both small and simple.   I sprayed the engine with Testors Aluminium non-buffing metalizer and then brushed on a very diluted coat of Tamiya matt black acrylic to give the engine some depth.
